Celebration of Family for Latinx Heritage Month. Friday, October 6, 7:00-9:00 pm. Intercultural Center: Join us for a celebration of family! Who is your familia (family) today? What does familia mean to you, and what does that look like? What do you hope for your familia? To answer these questions, we invite the campus community to reflect and share your cuentos de niñez (childhood stories) and think about how you have grown since being a child, and the familia(s) that have helped you in that process. Join the Latinx Heritage Month Committee in respecting, and valuing family as a central component of our culture and identity! There will be pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) and hot chocolate Abuelita.
Queer Postering. Saturday, October 7th. Time TBD. Intercultural Center, QT Room: Come create posters of queer people throughout history with other queer folx.
Moment of Silence with SISA and LHM. Monday, October 9th, 12:30 pm. Parrish Lawn: Declared as a ‘national holiday’, Columbus Day focuses national attention and praise towards a man who despite journaling the generous hospitality of the Tainos, begun the continual genocide of indigenous peoples and culture. To actively denounce Columbus Day, is not only to denounce the man, but also the systems that maintain the low socio-economic status, and contemporary traumas of Native Americans. It is to denounce the perpetuation of the myth that Indigenous peoples have contributed nothing, and are only remembered in relation to Columbus. Please join LHM in a campus-wide ‘town’ meeting on Parrish Lawn to hold a moment of silence for the millions of indigenous lives lost and parts of indigenous culture erased, as well as the active acknowledgement of the presence, and importance of Native Americans today.
